Ija Broka

Ija is a textile and mixed media artist who lives and works in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Having read Pharmacology at a Medical University, and briefly working as a nurse, Ija's career moved towards teaching and textiles. Textiles has always been a part of Ija's life who since early childhood designed and made her own clothes.

For over fifteen years Ija has taught creative art to a wide range of students. In 2002 Ija obtained a joint BA in Education and Textiles. She believes that creativity can change us for the better, as well as being strong means of therapy. In 2016 Ija received a Diploma of Higher Education in Creative Arts from OCA.

Ija is a parter in ILiNi designs, a family business based in the South West of England. She now spends her days designing and making bags, accessories and home decor. In 2016 Ija has also joined Salisbury Group of Artists.

Artist Statement

To me art is about telling a story, it captures our past, present and future. I use art like others use language, to tell narratives through my work.

Throughout my childhood years I was taught in an old fashioned and traditional way. I was educated the importance of rules and perfection in domestic female heritage of sewing, knitting and embroidery, which left no space for experiments and outrageous freedom. Growing up with such leadership and control I have been plunged into self-insecurity I didn’t realise I had. Just like Juliet Mitchell’s observation:

"…the status of a woman is held in the heart and the head as well as in the home: oppression has not been trivial or historically transitory – to maintain itself so efficiently it courses through the mental and emotional bloodstream."

Having realised my lack of confidence in crossing the lines and bending the rules, as other artists seem to do with ease, I faced my greatest challenge of finding strength and confidence through the exploration of the unknown. I challenge my self to question the rational and explore the unexpected to express myself through fabric manipulation and fabric experimentation as seen in my contemporary textile work.

Feminism is my greatest inspiration as an artist and I often explore the beauty of femininity and strength. In my recent works I have focused on exploring the different female figures that inspire me to overcome my fear and express my feelings through my art. The constant internal battle of women fascinates me and I want to learn and teach others to be confident, free and able to express themselves. Through my chosen medium of fabric and thread I hope to encourage more artists and viewers alike to understand and see that textiles is not a craft but an art in itself. As stated in The Subversive Stitch that

"The art/craft hierarchy suggests that art made with thread and art made with paint are intrinsically unequal: that the former is artistically less significant."

And to this day, as much as that divide between art and craft is not so apparent, it can still be said that textiles is a lesser of the two used mediums. Therefore within my use of textiles I wish to show that textile art can be just as monumental and meaningful as art done with paint.

I often use fabric manipulation, melting, hand embroidery, and hand dyed materials within my pieces. I enjoy experimenting with new techniques particularly if it allows me to create depth to the surface of my work. Even though textiles’ is my main focus I do enjoy incorporating everyday objects into my work, such as my infatuation with shoes and music instruments.

The challenge of stepping out of my comfort zone is a battle I am fighting till this day.
